You know how when you’re at some big event and you get a souvenir or something to remember it by? One congressman who attended Pope Francis‘ address decided to take the Holy Glass of Water the pontiff drank from and imbibed it himself.
Yes, Pennsylvania Democrat Bob Brady just walked up and took the glass last Thursday, and plenty of people noticed.
Brady told the Philadelphia Daily News he brought the glass back to his office, and he, his wife, and two of his staffers drank from it. He asked, “How many people do you know that drank out of the same glass as the pope?”
He plans to pour the rest of the water into a bottle and will use it to bless his grandkids. And in case that didn’t make things clear enough, Brady told CNN “I’m sure it’s blessed if the Pope drank out of it. Why not?”
But brace yourselves for this super-important clarification:
But the water isn’t “automatically” blessed, explained Catholic priest Edward Beck, a CNN religion commentator.
Francis would have had to bless the water before drinking it, Beck said. But it’s not so clear cut.
“Many believe it has touched holiness,” Beck said. “So it becomes a little subjective as to what makes it holy.”
